The post The Gregson Park Tile Mural first appeared on potteryali.]]> In December 2022, Ali completed her first commissioned public artwork – The Gregson Park Tile Mural. The project, primarily funded by City of Newcastle’s Special Business Rates program, is located in Hamilton, New South Wales on the busy corner of Cleary and Beaumont Streets.

An ode to the local park and community gathering space, Ali conducted a substantial amount of research in order to create an authentic installation that represented the sentiments of the local population — both First Nations as well as European. The result is a colourful mix of silk-screen printed photographs onto handcrafted tiles featuring local flowers and trees. The installation also includes the Master Plan for the upcoming reconstruction of the park.

A series of planters by local business Herb Urban frames the tile artwork.

The post Artist in Residence: Martin Middle School first appeared on potteryali.]]> I am currently working with the Art Department and several classes of students at Martin Middle School to create a “Community Quilt” made from clay tiles.  The students will make their mark on their tiles using found objects as well as stamps they have created themselves. Along the border of the “quilt” students will stamp words about character and strength in a number of languages that can be found spoken at Martin. We will ultimately install these tiles permanently in the halls of the school.
